Jipungwayi: Igniting the Fire of Change in Tiwi Youth

In the heart of the Tiwi Islands, a passionate young man named Michael "Mikey" from the saltwater and desert regions of Tiwi, Iwaidja, and Luritja heritage, has embarked on a journey to transform the lives of local youth. After years of schooling away from home, Mikey returned to his homeland and was confronted with the realities and disadvantages that the local youth face daily. This experience ignited a fire in him to make a lasting difference, not just for today, but for future generations.

Mikey recognised that the existing systems were not effectively supporting youth engagement, empowerment, and diversion.

They didn’t consider the importance of connections and the challenges around intergenerational trauma, loss of culture, and other complexities that are unique to First Nations’ peoples and communities. Determined to take action rather than wait for change, Mikey founded Jipungwayi, which means "The Fire in Me."

"I didn’t want to point fingers. I wanted to lead by example, and that’s what I hope these kids will do. I want to light the fire inside of them to make the right decisions and do the right thing, even in the face of adversity," said Mikey.

A Safe Haven for Youth

The main goal of Jipungwayi is to provide a safe space for young boys and girls to connect with their culture and participate in wellbeing activities. This environment helps guide them and break adverse generational cycles. Mikey's vision is to create pathways that lead to a better quality of life and empower youth to positively contribute to their communities.

Recently, Mikey became a father, which made him even more determined to build a brighter future. Through Jipungwayi's programs, he shows youth that it is possible to stay connected to their culture and where they come from, while successfully navigating the modern world.

Support from Community First Development

Mikey's journey with Community First Development began when a friend introduced him to the organisation. Seeking support to get Jipungwayi off the ground, Mikey was connected with Janet, a skilled volunteer with expertise in business development and strategic planning. Together, they crafted a Capability Statement that articulates the need for Jipungwayi and its goals to both the broader community and potential funders.

"This project has given me the tools and guidance needed to build a strong foundation for my business. Whereas if I was to do this myself, I wouldn’t know where to start," Mikey shared.

Building a Digital Presence

Realising the importance of digital presence, Mikey decided to create a website for Jipungwayi to raise awareness and reach a wider audience. We connected him with Deb, a skilled volunteer in website development and graphic design. Through a series of online briefings and a visit to Milikapiti, Deb supported Mikey to develop a vibrant and engaging website.

"Mikey has lots of rapport with the young people; he is respected and trusted. They just love him. He is a hero in the community, and the parents respect and trust him with their kids," said Deb.

Strategic Planning for the Future

Building on the foundation of the Capability Statement, Mikey worked with Fiona, another Community First Development volunteer, to develop a comprehensive business plan for the Jipungwayi Youth Pathways Program. This plan outlines Mikey's vision, goals, costings, promotional initiatives, and an implementation plan. It guides Jipungwayi’s governance and will be used to secure funding.

Looking Forward

Mikey's dedication and passion continue to inspire the Tiwi community. He has noticed increased confidence and pride among the youth who attend Jipungwayi activities. Looking to the future, Mikey is eager to watch Tiwi kids grow, find their sense of belonging and purpose, and become role models for the next generation.

We remain committed to supporting Jipungwayi's success and to further expand Jipungwayi’s impact across the Tiwi Islands.

To support community-led development activities and projects like these become a community friend.
